Grant received his Bachelors of Business Administration in 1983, a Masters of Business Administration in 1984, and a Juris Doctor in 1987, all from the University of Georgia. While attending the University of Georgia School of Law he served on the editorial board of the Georgia Journal of International and Comparative Law.
Since his admission to the Bar in 1987, Mr. Smith has been a leader in numerous defense and transportation organizations. He served as Vice President of the Georgia Defense Lawyers Association in 2001, Executive Vice President in 2003-2004 and President in 2004-2005. He has been a member of the GDLA Board of Directors since 1997 and chaired that organization's Motor Vehicle Committee from 1999-2000. Between 1999 and 2000, Mr. Smith chaired the Commercial Transportation Litigation Committee of the American Bar Association and has been a member of the committee since 1993. He is a member of the American College of Transportation Attorneys, Defense Research Institute, Trucking Industry Defense Association, State Bar of Georgia, Atlanta Bar Association, Lawyers Club of Atlanta and the Atlanta Claims Association. Mr. Smith frequently lectures at national seminars including the Defense Research Institute, ABA Megaconference and the American Trucking Association's Litigation Center.
Mr. Smith is national counsel for a large motor carrier and is regional counsel for a number of large motor carriers. He has handled cases as far west as Wyoming and has handled several cases in Florida and Tennessee. He also serves as counsel for a large construction insurer. He recently defended a large construction case involving 19 plaintiffs and 9 defendants.
